How to Secure Your Storage Unit and Keep It Safe

Renting a storage unit is a great way to protect your belongings, and taking extra care when you store guarantees that your things remain safe from environmental risks, damage, and theft. At StaxUP Storage, we're experienced when it comes to storing securely. Here are some of our tips for protecting both your storage space and your peace of mind.

1. Choose a Secure Storage Facility

Before you rent a storage unit, make sure you research your chosen storage facility's security measures. Look for security features like:

  • 24/7 video surveillance
  • Fenced facility
  • A gated entrance with personal entry codes
  • On-site administration and security
  • Well-lit areas to keep intruders away

2. Buy the Right Lock

Not every lock is built equal. To keep your storage unit safe, pick a robust, tamper-resistant lock. Here are some of our recommendations:

  • Disc locks: Durable, secure, and designed to resist bolt cutters.
  • Cylinder locks: Tamper-resistant locks that are installed directly into the door of your storage unit.
  • Heavy-duty padlocks: Easy to find and usually inexpensive, although not as secure as alternatives.

3. Maintain Up-to-Date Inventory

Keep a thorough inventory of everything in your storage unit, along with pictures and any relevant serial numbers. This will help in the worst case scenario of theft or loss from your unit. For simple tracking, consider implementing a digital inventory app.

4. Store Valuables Smartly

If you are storing anything of value, be sure to keep it in locked, sturdy containers placed within your storage unit. Place these containers at the rear of your unit to make them difficult to access.

For another kind of protection, make sure to keep anything delicate in a climate-controlled storage unit.

5. Avoid Sharing Access

Limit access to your storage unit as much as you can. The fewer keys and codes you've distributed, the lower the possibility of illegal access to your unit. Share your key, access credentials, or entry code with only a few people.

6. Visit Your Unit Frequently

Periodically check in on your storage unit to be sure everything is in place. If you find evidence of tampering, be sure to tell your facility administration right away.

7. Protect against Environmental Damage

Changes in temperature, humidity, and moisture as well as pests can all affect storage spaces. The best solution for this is using a climate-controlled storage unit, but if that isn't an option – or if you want to be especially cautious – try these suggestions:

  • Use desiccant packs or silica gel moisture absorbs to keep your belongings safe.
  • Store things in plastic bins rather than cardboard boxes to discourage bugs.
  • Cover delicate items like furniture with protective blankets.

8. Make Sure You Have Insurance Coverage

While many storage facilities have insurance policies, you may also want to check if your items are insured by checking your renter's or homeowner's insurance. Should theft, fire, or natural disaster strike, insuring your stored belongings provides financial protection.

9. Record Unusual Behavior

Tell the management right away if you observe anything unusual at the storage facility, including manipulated locks or suspicious individuals around the property. Being proactive helps to keep the facility safe for every tenant.

Following these guidelines will help keep your storage unit safe and make sure that your items are well-protected. A little extra effort goes a long way in keeping your items secure for a long time.
