How to Store Your Mattress in a Storage Unit

Buying a mattress means investing in your comfort and well-being – so if you plan to store your mattress for a long period of time, it's essential to do so correctly. If you don't take proper precautions for storing your mattress, you may end up with structural damage, mold, or mildew. Whether you're moving, downsizing, or just need a place to keep your mattress for a while, here’s how to store your mattress properly in a storage unit.

1. Thoroughly Clean Your Mattress

Before you store your mattress in a storage unit, clean it thoroughly. This will help to prevent odors, bacteria, and mold growth. Follow these steps:

  • Strip the bedding off your mattress.
  • Vacuum the entire surface – top, bottom, and sides.
  • Spot clean any stains with mattress stain remover or a mild detergent mixed with warm water.
  • Deodorize by sprinkling baking soda over the mattress and letting it sit for a few hours. Then vacuum it again.
  • Flip the mattress over and repeat these steps.
  • Air-dry the mattress completely before storing it to prevent moisture buildup.

2. Protect It With a Mattress Cover

A high-quality, breathable mattress cover or bag will protect your mattress from dampness, dirt, and dust. Thick plastic covers may protect your mattress during moving, but they aren't the right choice if you plan to store your mattress in a storage unit long-term – the thicker the plastic, the more likely it is to retain humidity and encourage mold growth. Instead, opt for a mattress bag made from fabric or breathable plastic. Many StaxUP Storage locations sell mattress bags and other packing supplies for exactly this purpose.

3. Store It Flat, If Possible

Although it may seem like a good idea to store your mattress in your storage unit standing straight up, to conserve room, this can cause the interior materials to migrate and over time warp and damage the structure of your mattress. Instead, lay the mattress flat on an elevated surface like a platform or wooden pallet. This will keep air flowing around your mattress and prevent moisture from the floor seeping into the surface of the mattress.

4. Choose a Climate-Controlled Storage Unit

If you plan to store your mattress in a storage unit for an extended period of time, a climate-controlled storage unit is the best choice. Extreme temperatures and humidity may cause severe damage to the structure and material of your mattress; by storing in a climate-controlled unit, you'll be able to avoid these factors. Regulated surroundings help stop mildew, mold, and decay.

5. Keep It Away From Heavy Items

Stacking bulky items on top of your mattress will cause it to lose shape. Leave enough space in your storage unit that you can arrange your boxes and furniture around your mattress. If you must put something on top of the mattress, keep it light – that is, bedding or pillows.

6. Check On Your Mattress Often

If you're going to store your mattress long-term, make a plan to visit your storage facility frequently and check your mattress for any evidence of dampness or pests. If you find any problems, act quickly to dry and clean the mattress before they get worse.

7. Air Out Before Use

Take your mattress out of the bag when you're ready to use it again, and let it air out in a well-ventilated area for several hours. Give it another vacuuming before you put your bedding back on.

Storing your mattress properly in a storage unit guarantees that it will remain safe for years to come and keep in good shape. Following these guidelines – cleaning, protecting, storing flat, and choosing the right environment – you can prolong the life of your mattress and save money on replacements.
